David Merritt II is a writer, director, and producer from Durham, North Carolina who now resides in Studio City, California. David, an artist with a passion for painting and sculpture, earned his BA in Art History from East Carolina University followed by a Master’s Degree in Film from the University of North Carolina.
David was moved to Los Angeles by producers Thom Mount (Bull Durham) and George Jackson III (New Jack City) for his first feature film deal after seeing his critically acclaimed short film Rain Dance.
David served as a writer and director for 36 writing credits and 4 MOVS for World Wrestling Entertainment in 2005. In 2006, David served as Story Editor for WWE and THQ 2k video games. In 2008, David formed King David Entertainment.
In 2013, David formed the non-profit, The Brave New World Program, in partnership with Sony Electronics. TBNWP is dedicated to teaching minority youth how to write, direct, and produce on a Hollywood Soundstage.
In 2016, David Merritt II wrote, directed, produced, and released his first feature film, Mouthpiece, shot in an amazing seven days by Directory of Photography, Steve Mason of Mad Men. Mouthpiece was distributed internationally at the Berlin 2017 Film Mart as well as at Festival De Cannes Market. Mouthpiece premiered on SVOD on the Urban Movie Channel in August 2016. That same year, David placed as a finalist for the ABC Directing Program. In August 2017, David placed as a finalist for the CBS Directing Program. In August 2017, Universal Cable Productions selected David as the 2017 NBC Universal UCP Pitch Fest Winner. David developed the winning pitch, a supernatural YA thriller, in partnership with Universal Content Productions (http://variety.com/2017/tv/news/universal-cable-pitchfest-winners-2017-1202524436/).
In 2018, David entered Development with Universal Content Productions and pitched his YA supernatural thriller with Executive Producer and iconic author Walter Mosley to networks and streaming services. In 2019, he formed the DGA, WGA, SAG Union signatory production company King David Films, LLC. In August 2019, David’s gritty Crime Drama was a finalist in the Sundance Episodic Lab 2019.
In September 2019, David acquired a position as an Adjunct Professor for the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill as the Director of the university’s Hollywood Internship Program. David creates unique projects that delve into man’s inhumanity to man and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit with flawed characters that claw their way back to redemption. David writes supernatural, horror, and gritty crime dramas that not only shock, but also make the audience think, laugh, cry and most importantly FEEL.
